Yujiapu (Chinese Manhattan... *attempt*)

What you need to know...

  • Construction began in 2009. Scheduled for completion in 2019.
  • Will provide about 9.5 million square meters of office space at a cost of 200 billion yuan (that's U$D 32 billion at today's rate).
  • Includes a transportation hub with a high-speed train to Beijing in 45 minutes.

Yujiapu originally a fishing village that dates back to the 15th century now aims to become the new largest financial center in the world.

The Rockefeller Center (with the backing of the Rockefeller Group) and the Twin Towers will be closely replicated. The master centerpiece will be over 580 meters, taller than the new One World Trade Center building.

This is one of China's biggest and most ambitious projects. Critics however, call the project absurd, and potential investors refer to it as "way to risky".
